The Winds Have Shifted or Should I say the Tides!

Picture of Poseidon holding his trident standing in the Ocean waves!

We live in such a fast paced world. I fear it is difficult to have a spiritual practice that fills you with hope, love, and gratitude. The rat race is there to keep you so busy, that you remain a consumer, and not a doer or, a mover and a shaker as my college history teacher used to say.

There is also of course, the day to day activities that the internet & social media are deeming as "witchcraft". Like vacuuming your house, cleaning and cleansing your space, cooking, lighting an aroma therapy candle while soaking in the tub. etc.

We all do these things, but I do not like the "W" word!  What is funny and ironic is I actually probably "fit in" to this "category." You notice all the quotations.
They are there on purpose, because all of this is made up, by us collectively, plus our brains love to compartmentalize everything to make us feel safer!

So back to my original title Old God, New World. I may not identify with the "W" word because of my actual upbringing. I was raised smack dab in the middle of the Southern Bible Belt. I used to loathe living here. However, I just love the genuine hospitality of the South with a good mix of Eff You, if you cross the line. Cue Johnny Cash's "Walk the Line."

I almost majored in history, but my college Western Civics teacher talked me out of it. This is the same teacher who used the term "movers & shakers." when it came to any backbone of any civilization. Your artisans, cobblers, blacksmiths, butchers, bakers, candle-stick makers...I couldn't help myself haha.

Every civilization before the industrial revolution had a copacetic community, we all relied on one another collectively, so we could all live in our small villages. Most of us would travel less than 20 miles in our entire lifetime! So, thank your lucky stars you were born in this time or not. It really is all about perspective!

Rewind back to 2022, I was listening to a lot of podcasts working overnight and being done by 6 am. There were tons of podcasts subjects. Astrology, Spiritualism, Neuroscience, and more, but I kept coming across these "Witchy podcasts." Some I loved, and still listen when I can.

Others not so much, there was one podcast I came across which almost made me stop listening to any witchy podcast in general because of one of the hosts! The content was similar to some of the other podcasts I had listened to, it was a little more giggly and fun, less serious, more goofing off, which is fine. Your practice does not have to be serious all the time!

Then one episode I was done! Finished! No more for me, thanks! One of the hosts was telling a story about gas-lighting a person as a joke that went on for months! First of all, this is never okay! It is 2024, and as a female you should be ashamed of yourself for promoting such toxic behavior!  I had to draw the line and quit listening to that podcast. Blocking you and sending you blessings!

I unfollowed them on all social platforms. I was really shook, how someone with a spiritual practice, can be so "open-minded" yet joke about their own toxic behavior like gas-lighting that she was putting out into the collective world! This did not sit well with me as a human with a spiritual practice and as an Aquarian.

So, back to the really good witchy podcast. Let's first talk about The Magick Kitchen podcast.
  • /The first thing I love about this podcast is the age difference between the hosts! This is truly one of the best collaborations because you get to hear Leandra Witchwood who is the elder of the 2 pure Gen X, and Elyse Welles who I want to call Millenial, but can't find any birth information on her. Good for you Elyse for protecting your personal information. Boundaries are a necessary thing!
  • The second thing I love about this podcast is their practices are similar, yet completely different, as every one's practice should be. If you're not comfortable working with deities, then don't work with them. When I heard this, I was like 💙🙌💙! This made me so happy to hear! Because everyone's spiritual path is different, I felt so much ease when I was given grace from 2 strangers that I have a para-social relationship with on a week to week podcast basis.
  • The third thing is hearing the different relationships. That these women have with different deities! This fascinated me! These ladies always honored the land they practiced on. There is a level of sincerity and thoughtfulness these 2 women possess when it comes to talking about their practices. I have to commend them for speaking openly about private matters such as their spiritual practice!

I could not tell you what episode number this is from, but the ladies were talking about how certain deities have changed over the years. Poseidon was mentioned! My ears perked up immediately! I'm a Scorpio rising, love the water, and Little Mermaid was my favorite movie growing up.

Elyse said, "That Poseidon has become less salty over the years." I have my theories on this from a cultural standpoint. Pouring part of your drink out for your homies who have passed, or are no longer with us is not a new thing!

This is called, libation, and it is used in many cultures to honor the dead, the gods, and heroes. This seems to go back to every ancient culture we know of today from Egypt, Greece, Sumeria, India, East Asia, Japan, Rome, and even ancient Judaism, as well as, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Siberian Shamanism.
Even in ancient African cultures the act of pouring libation is a ceremonial tradition in the way of giving homage to their Ancestors.  South Americans of the Andes would pour a small amount on the ground before drinking as an offering to Mother Earth. There are ceremonies from all over the world that partake in libation.

So, let's go back to the modern age of pouring a drink out for your homies.  I'm sure this offering to your homies, probably pleased the deity. So, with the 1990's Hip Hop Culture you had tons of young people mimicking people like TuPac. This only reinforced "libation" in our modern culture.

Another offering to Poseidon, that I think most people don't think about is the study of astrology. Think about how many birth charts were hand drawn with all the glyphs of the zodiac signs as well as, the astrological planetary glyphs. Every month, I listen to a horoscope and anytime there is any transit involving Neptune (Roman equivalent to Poseidon) I am essentially drawing Poseidon's Trident! One more astrological influence of Poseidon being less salty, is Neptune has been in Pisces for the last 14 years, and in 2025 Neptune will move into Aries. So talk about 2 gods, who are brothers, fighting amongst each other?!? You can imagine the chaos! Right?

The sea is also one place on Earth that has not completely been explored. You have to realize everything that Poseidon covers: the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses. According to an article from nature.com, He had dominion over the sea, and while sending earthquakes; He also made time for creating animals. His most celebrated creation was the horse. Poseidon loved his horses so much that he held on to some to pull his chariot through the waves of the sea. These first sea horses -- called hippocampi or, loosely translated to horse monsters- had the tails of fish and two front hooves. The article says, "They could be seen on a windy day, racing across the foam and waves of the sea's surface. That is why ocean breakers are still called white horses.

I'm actually quite amazed at how much of Poseidon's legacy lives on today. He is one of the 12 Olympian gods who lived on Mount Olympus. One of my favorite movies growing up was Little Mermaid. Triton's are fish with human torsos who are sometimes depicted with Poseidon. I wonder where Disney got that name? This is the description of King Triton of the Little Mermaid. If I remember correctly, King Triton rode a chariot pulled by dolphins.

Poseidon lives on everyday in our lives. There are also people who have studied water for their entire lives. Dr. Emoto was a Japanese scientist who studied water and the way it is connected to our individual and collective consciousness. There is also a Veda Austin in New Zealand who studies water as the Source. She has proven water can understand us and communicate to us using what she calls hydroglyphs. Her work is mind blowing if you've never seen it. I linked her website above. Her instagram is a great place to start. She writes to the water. She speaks to the water. Then freezes the water and out come these amazing hydroglyphs!

So with all this going on in our modern world, I will have to agree with Elyse Welles on this one! Poseidon is definitely less salty because we are waking up to the fact that we need the Earth, the Water, and even the salt of the Sea. More people now than ever before are giving offerings to Poseidon without them even realizing the spiritual intention or act of libation behind the action of blessing the homies!
